When will self study options be available for CGRC?

Looking for self study options for CGRC. I see a lot of folks asking for this, but very little action on the part of ICS2 to facilitate.

Other than reading old CAP books and/or publicly available NIST documents, are there any other options?

I am not interested in any form of instructor led "live" class. I'd be open to something similar to the CCSP online course.

When, ISC2, will you provide more options for those of us who prefer to self study?

Frankly ISC2 isn't great at keeping up books for Certifications that don’t seem to do great numbers.

Unfortunately, it’s a little difficult to gather information on how many folk have a given certification as ISC2 has become less transparent in the last couple of years:

However it is possible to look a little more deeply at the data as there are recent archives which you can extrapolate from with numbers as recently as late 2022 and perhaps make inferences as to the health of a certification(for reference HCISSP was binned and the last member count was around 1.5k). Last number I see for CAP is 4,157 globally, so I’d say it’s better off that the old CISSP concentrations as of a year or two ago.

It would be really good if there was a refreshed CBK, Study Guide or Textbook for every certification at least every 3-4 years, or at least a statement that things haven’t changed so the latest available is still good(there are reasons I think why this is hard).

In terms of what is available… There are flash cards, and an exam outline and a flashy marketing PDF with lots of happy looking people(probably they had big training budgets or were well off so they could afford Instructor led training…):

Anyway it may be that some of these play better for the US Federal space, or similar and ISC2 judge that they just don’t need the inexpensive text book option or that this is too costly to maintain, I really hope this isn’t/wish it wasn’t the case.

Great reply! Thanks for all the data points and information. I would very much like to continue my journey with ISC2 - I have the CISSP and CCSP, but would very much like to continue on with the CGRC. Given the lack of attention that ISC2 is giving to these lower volume certifications, I am guessing my best bet is to become a member of ISACA and sit for the CRISC as that certification has plenty of self-study materials available on LinkedIn Learning and Amazon to name a couple.

HI,

I too wish to prepare on my own and then write CGRC exams, I think that is not possible currently. If not when will that option be available? Also, I will need study material, such as review manual, questions answer practice sessions. Appreciate if you can share related links, thank you.

Just looking for a current group or someone in ISC2 Community who has taken the CGRC. I have the flash cards and the CGRC study guide already and have been reviewing several NIST pubs.

Hi Kaity, any dates yet when there will ISC2 official guide to prepare for CGRC exam? I am all set to start self-study / preparing for the exam, however do not have any latest book to study from. I believe questions / answers also help a lot - is ISC2 working on the questions/answers also? Appreciate your response ASAP!

I hope the new material that Kaity is referring to includes affordable self-study material. The only developments I have seen from ISC2 recently is online/adaptive self training. I am not interested in these expensive options that also do not suit my study style. I am looking for self study material that is affordable and available in hard copy so that I can annotate.

Hi -

The last official resource was a book by Paul Howard titled “Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CAP CBK” the primary difference between that book and the current CBK was the move from NIST 800-37 Revision 1 to Revision 2 which added a step to the Risk Management Framework. A lot of the concepts remain the same.

If you’re taking the exam before June, you can use this study guide though it remains to be seen how much the exam will change when it refreshes in June:

Just a minor correction, it's Patrick rather than Paul and the book is really helpful but I'd recommend revising NIST standards mentioned in the Mango manual kindly provided Ryan.

I fully agree, I have a strong preference for on-demand over Virtual-Instructor led. Actual in-classroom is not practical at all.
